Our client was one of India’s largest cloud computing companies with offices across multiple locations in the country and abroad. The organization was struggling with monitoring 4000+ network devices spread across multiple locations. Taashee implemented a comprehensive solution based on Nagios XI to address the client’s issues.
Our client is India’s first Tier 4 certified data center providing a penalty backed SLA of 99.995% uptime. Silicon India has acknowledged the client as one of the Top 25 Cloud Computing companies in India based on economy, usability and flexibility. As one of the largest cloud providers in India, they offer private cloud on demand, cloud hosting and cloud servers hosting solutions.
The client had more than 4000 devices spread across multiple locations which included Linux servers, Windows servers, switches, firewalls, routers, load balancers, etc. Monitoring these devices manually was proving almost impossible and without proper oversight, even minute malfunctions in single devices led to network-wide downtimes, resulting in humongous losses.
They had floated a pilot project where Nagios Core was implemented. But instead of simplifying the existing problems, it complicated them further. For starters, the tool was found to be inducing fake alerts, which led to extensive repeated investigations by the company’s internal IT team as well as external experts. This resulted in a loss of man hours and put a serious strain on the monitoring and security budget. The tool also lacked ticketing features for alerts to be escalated from one level to another.
When the client approached Taashee, they were looking for a comprehensive, single-point-of-contact monitoring tool to address the above issues. Their ideal tool would have been able to trigger immediate network-wide alerts at 1-minute intervals. It would also provide graphical resource utilization charts with time flexibility on a weekly or monthly basis and continuously maintain a list of top 10 alerts graphically.
Taashee’s monitoring experts first appraised the client’s unique requirements and recommended the implementation of Nagios XI. Nagios XI is a Nagios product which provides network, server and application monitoring in one easy-to-configure package, along with advanced alerting and reporting. It also provides graphical resource utilization updates on weekly or monthly basis with top 10 alerts.
We custom-configured Nagios XI as per the client’s requirements. The tool’s latent easy scalability feature helped us achieve the goal of continuously monitoring 4000+ devices. The client could now view and resolve network issues in real-time with enhanced infrastructure management. This resulted in increased efficiency and operational consistency for the client.
To address the issue of alerts, we customized the Hawkeye app from Nagios XI in such a way that regular alerts could be received by the client with 1-minute time intervals. Hawkeye was further configured to sync remote hosts and servers, trigger time checks using TCP / UDP and check NTP status at server level.
Moreover, we installed Nagios Incident Manager on top to enhance Nagios XI with the required ticketing features. The web-based interface helped the client to take control of the incoming tickets for different users with easy access to ticket history, simplified third-party API integration and faster incident response times.
