OpenShift and SSO implementation in the Manufacturing domain

Taashee helps an esteemed client in the manufacturing industry improve production uptime and data security with Red Hat OpenShift and Red Hat SSO.

Overview

In this project, one of our esteemed clients from the manufacturing sector sought advanced digital transformation for high performance and security, which are key to meeting production goals and protecting valuable operations data since their existing platform required downtime for large updates. Taashee helped the company adopt Red Hat OpenShift, with Red Hat SSO for an added layer of security, to replace their monolithic approach with a modular, responsive, microservices-based architecture.

OpenShift and SSO Overview

About the Client

Our client, is one of the fastest growing conglomerates in India with revenues exceeding USD 1.2 Billion through highly engaged customers worldwide. They boast a workforce of over 15,000 people working for 7 companies encompassing 16 business verticals, including battery manufacturing, electronics, power systems, electrical infra, and others.

Client Challenges

The monolithic Oracle platform used by the client to run several critical systems meant updates could not be made quickly and had to be planned months in advance due to the resulting disruption to production output. Their order management system can govern more than two hundred production changeover processes and integrations between various production lines, ensuring the right tools are in place and system status information is constantly updated. Any potential downtime to this system could jeopardize the facility’s ability to meet daily production goals for multiple products. The client was also struggling to find resources skilled in working with the older Oracle technology deployed at their facilities. In order to support their vision of advanced digital factories, the client sought to adopt a comprehensive and more responsive infrastructure platform.

Openshift SSO Challenges

Our Solution

Taashee’s Red Hat experts reviewed the client’s existing setup and suggested they replace their Oracle platform with Red Hat OpenShift, an enterprise Kubernetes container platform, deployed on-premise in their local data center to create a cloud-native, modular architecture for their operational processes and systems. Adopting Red Hat OpenShift meant that they could use a modular development approach where components could be reused. OpenShift’s scale-out platform architecture also provided consistency across different environments while keeping pace with growing demands.

In addition to more frequent, iterative performance improvements, the client could now complete similar updates to address potential security vulnerabilities and threats in its crucial manufacturing systems. In a day and age where most IT resources were working from home, ensuring data security across their distributed IT infra was proving difficult. Taashee implemented Red Hat’s single sign-on technology (SSO) to support admin and back-end user login across the entire IT environment with a single set of credentials for increased security and control. SSO, paired with Red Hat’s frequent patches and bug fixes for the entire container application stack, including the container host, cluster management, and applications and services running on the platform, ensured that all security vulnerabilities had been plugged. Moreover, OpenShift allowed the client to update patches on a rolling schedule, causing zero disruption to daily production.

Results & Benefits

The consistency in foundation across environments and continuous enterprise support ensured that the client could run Red Hat OpenShift on-premise or as a managed cloud service in a hyper-scale cloud environment such as AWS. Replacing their outdated, monolithic system architecture with Taashee’s modular, responsive enterprise open source solutions has created new opportunities for the client to expand their approach of digital transformation to all their factories.
